Thousands to Walk For a Sustainable Energy Future

31 October 2006

This Saturday, the second International Day of Action on Climate Change, thousands of people will join the Walk Against Warming in Brisbane to show their support for a sustainable energy future.

“If we don’t do something to address climate change now, it will be too late for our kids,” Climate Action Brisbane spokesperson, Emma Brindal said today.

“The drought that is currently being experienced is just a sign of what more is to come. It is time to start dealing with the root causes of the drought rather than opting for band-aid solutions. This means we need to make deep cuts in our greenhouse gas emissions by moving towards using renewable energies.” said Ms Brindal.

“This week Peter Beattie pointed out that nuclear power needs 25% more water than coal power does. While this is true, solar (photovoltaic cells) power uses approximately 6% of the water that coal power does, while wind power uses well under 1%. By giving support to these technologies, we would be both addressing climate change and using our rapidly diminishing water wisely.”

“With only 4% of Queensland’s energy coming from renewable energy sources, it is well and truly time to see this change. Brisbane residents will be walking to tell our politicians that it is time to take action.” said Ms Brindal

“Many concerned people are now starting to reduce their consumption and energy use which is very positive and extremely important. However, the necessary cuts in emissions won’t happen without governments at every level legislating for change” said Ms Brindal.

This year actions are taking place in 48 countries and more than 20 locations around Australia.
