Brisbane activists on trial over Pine Gap inspection

Brisbane peace activists Adele Goldie and Jim Dowling will face trial on Tuesday for conducting a “Citizens Inspection” of US spy base, Pine Gap in late 2005.  The pair will be appearing in the NT Supreme Court in Alice Springs with their co-defendants Bryan Law (Cairns), and Donna Mulhearn (Sydney).

On Tuesday morning, Brisbane Peace advocates will take action to show their support for the Pine Gap 4 and their call for peace and an end to the war in Iraq.

Under never-before-used legislation, the  “Pine Gap 4” face up to seven years in prison for trespassing on Pine Gap and 2 years for taking photos of the facility, whose satellite system plays an instrumental role in the US-led war in Iraq.

On December 8th, 2005, they entered Pine Gap facility to expose the complicity of the Australian government in state sponsored terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq.  They conducted a peaceful and well notified protest against war and militarism to draw attention to the secret U.S. base which coordinated bombing during the war on Iraq and still plays a part in the daily surveillance and occupation of the Iraqi people.

As the Pine Gap 4 trial commences, Brisbane will engage in a prayer vigil at St Mary’s church South Brisbane at 8.30 am, followed by a procession to the “Scales of Justice” outside the Supreme Court in the city, cnr George and Adelaide Streets.
An evening vigil will be held at the same location from 4:30pm.  All are welcome.
