Media Alert - 27 March 2007
Community takes action against the Nuclear Cane Toad
Date: Today - Tuesday March 27, 2007
Time: 11: 45 Place: Carlton Crest Hotel (Sebel & Citigate), Roma St, Brisbane (near cnr Ann St - opposite King George Square)
Members of the Queensland Nuclear Free Alliance (QNFA) will use song and visuals to counter Ziggy Switkowski’s vision for a nuclear Australia and Premier Beattie's new-found support for the uranium industry. The action will take place outside an exclusive press club forum where Mr. Switkowski will be debating nuclear expansion with Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) director Don Henry.
"We are extremely concerned about the nuclear push coming from both sides of politics," states QNFA spokesperson Robin Taubenfeld. "From uranium mining to nuclear power, the nuclear industry is toxic and polluting - and it must be stopped."
"Premier Beattie has turned his back on the community, announcing from overseas that he supports expanding the uranium industry, breaking his election promises in September 2006.” "It is outrageous to see Labor leaders standing side by side with Howard's nuclear cronies on this critical issue." Mr Switkowski headed the nuclear review that proposed an expanded uranium industry and the development of up to 25 nuclear reactors along the east coast of Australia.
“Switkowski is using global warming as an excuse to develop dangerous industries. This is dishonest and unacceptable."
"Turning our precious water resources into radioactive tailings from uranium mining, creating a legacy of unmanageable highly radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, and putting our community at risk of nuclear accidents is not a solution.” "Don Henry has rightly compared the current nuclear push with the introduction of the cane toad.” “Like the cane toad,” Ms Taubenfeld explains, “nuclear power is toxic and dangerous: it is the wrong 'solution' to the problem of global warming; it may spread throughout Australia if introduced; and it has the potential to wipe out the world's flora, fauna, and populations.”
"Our governments need to make decisions that will be beneficial for our children and our children’s children, not ones that will leave future generations cleaning up our mess.”
