NUCLEAR LEGACIES in AUSTRALIA & THE PACIFIC

Friends of the Earth Brisbane and Rally for Peace and Nuclear Disarmament Inc invite all community members to join us as at the Hiroshima Day Peace rally and march this Sunday, August 5.

62 years on since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the nuclear threat remains greater than
ever. Nuclear weapons have been exploded in Algeria, Russia, China, Japan, Marshall Islands, Tahiti, India,
Pakistan, Korea, USA and Australia.

Nuclear weapons states, including the US, are upgrading their nuclear arsenals. A new nuclear arms
race is on its way.

Australian uranium, sold to weapons states USA and China, is already fuelling a global nuclear crisis.

Australia shares a common legacy of nuclearisation and colonisation with her neighbours in the Pacific and
Australians know first-hand the devastating affects of radioactive exposure and fallout.

Yet the federal government wants to bring full-scale nuclear expansion to our shores.

Friends of the Earth takes this opportunity to remind our politicians of the dangers of the nuclear cycle
and the fact that nuclear power production goes hand in hand with weapons proliferation.

We do not want to see Australia travel this path. It is time we learn from our past mistakes and say “no!”
to this deadly industry. Now is the chance for Australians to decide whether we want a nuclear future
or a peaceful and sustainable one.

Speakers at the rally have witnessed the devastating impact of nuclear testing in Australia and the
Pacific:

Rebecca Bear-Wingfield: Senior Cultural Woman –
Arabunna Kokotha People SA
Lew Rice: Atomic Ex-Servicemen’s Assoc A.C.T. Inc
Nic Maclellan: Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific
Journalist on disarmament, Human Rights and
Self-determination
MAPW: Member of Medical Assoc for Prevention of War;
ICAN international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.
Plus music by the Songlines Choir
