NO NEW COAL!
No industrial development at Shoalwater!
Write a letter to Premier Bligh NOW!
This month QLD Premier Anna Bligh has announced plans for three new coal mines, a 500k rail link and the first new coal port for 25 years to be sited at Port Clinton in Shoalwater Bay.
It's climate insanity to be further opening up the coal industry in the face of climate change. QLD has a responsibility to the world and future generations to stop this development.
The Shoalwater Bay region, with RAMSAR listed wetlands and subject to two migratory bird treaties feeds into the seagrass meadows that nourish Queensland's endangered dugong population.
An opportunity exists for Premier Bligh to react positively with investment in alternatives and protect the important Shoalwater Bay area from further development enhancing it's protection as a national treasure.
Tell the Premier that it's not on!
No new coal!
Protect the Shoalwater Region today!

Australia's First Climate Camp a Success
In July a rash of protests in Newcastle, Australia, have served to draw the public eye towards the shocking contribution of the coal industry to climate change. From July 10-15, over a thousand citizens, activists and environmental organisations have been holding a series of educational forums, practical workshops and direct actions to highlight the urgent need to end coal mining and export and turn to sustainable energy and lifestyles.
Police and coal executives were predicting confrontations over the proposed blockade of a coal train in Sunday www.climateimc.org
However, two non-violent direct actions to stop coal trains went off without a hitch, and people locked onto both coal trains and a conveyor belt at Carrington coal terminal. 41 people were arrested in all.
In related actions, activists scaled a smokestack at SwanbankB power station north of Brisbane with four arrests, and 27 were arrested at a lock on action at Eraring power station south of Newcastle.

Narangba Industrial Estate - Toxic Hotspot
In June 2006 the community living in the vicinity of the Narangba Industrial Estate began a class action against the state of Queensland over years of contamination and illness resulting from the proximity of hazardous industries to their homes.
Many locals have experienced health problems since the 2005 Binary Chemicals fire, but some have been experiencing the ill effect of the estate for a lot longer.

Friends of the Earth are the only environmental organsiation in Australia with a social justice perspective on the issues. For us, the rights of people are just as important as the need to preserve wild places: the health of the earth is intergral to the well-being of the people who rely on her.
Hence justice has been a driving factor in our campaigns whether it be fighting for the recognition of the victims of climate change to get them refugee status and to help adaptation in the most ecologically sound manner, or defending the people threatened by the nuclear industry, the military and toxic industries.
