It's proven a tough start to the year for many of us in Brisbane, and we at FoE hope you and your family are safe and well. It's been quite incredible to see the massive community response to the flooding, and really fills our hearts with hope. There's lots on our plate at FoE too, as we say farewell to our West End house and renovate our new office space at Woolloongabba. We still need lots of help, please contact us to get involved.

Queensland Government negligent as mines release toxins into flood waters

Flooded mine sites will be releasing huge amounts of heavy metals into the flood waters and much of this will be stored in sediment and pile up behind weirs in catchments and be a pollution problem for many years. Pollutants include dangerous levels of copper, uranium, zinc, aluminium, lead, arsenic, cobalt and nickel.

If you can donate money, time or goods to help us renovate our new premises, we would be overjoyed!  Our wish list includes: ecoretrofitting advice, hardware, paint, rollers and brushes, insulation, whirlybirds, skylights, window sunproofing, solar panels, fans, floor coverings, window blinds and expertise.  We also need a gas stove.  If you can help us or know a business, builder or truck owner who might like to help us, phone Kim on 0413 397839.

War games threaten the GBR and Coral Sea communties: FoE report released

Friends of the Earth Brisbane have released our response on the AECOM Public Environment Report for Excercise Talisman Sabre 2011, the US-Australian joint war games. TS11 is the biggest military operation outside of war and takes place in several places in Australia, including the Shoalwater Bay area in QLD, the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. The PER has no legal standing and is not an EIS. It is an elaborate greenwashing excercise for a toxic, dangerous and murderous industry: militarism.  Read our report here:
