Coal mine linked to accelerated loss of Great Barrier Reef

Research from climate change experts released this week shows that coal mines and subsequent carbon emissions will accelerate the loss of the Great Barrier Reef resulting in jobs losses and massive impacts on the Queensland economy.

Mega coal mine challenged in QLD Land & Environment Court

A landmark case in Australia’s environmental history will begin in Brisbane on Monday when environment group Friends of the Earth take on global mining giant Xstrata in a bid to have a proposed mega coal mine in Queensland rejected. 

The court case will be the first ever in Australia to argue exclusively for outright refusal of a coal mine based on climate change impacts.

Peace and green advocates gear up for action as US war games begin

Peace and green campaigners will be increasing their activity in the Rockhampton region this week in opposition to Joint US – AUS military exercises, Exercise Talisman Sabre, which officially begins today. The Peace Convergence is an alliance of peace, environmental, indigenous and religious groups and individuals.

Reported to be the US’s largest military exercise, Talisman Sabre involves land, sea and air forces practicing bombing, landing and raiding primarily in Central Queensland  -  just north of Rockhampton -  at Shoalwater Bay and in the nearby Great Barrier Reef Marine Park -  as well as in the Coral, Arafura and Timor Seas and in the NT.

After months of being homeless, Friends of the Earth have started cleaning and renovating our new office at 20 Burke St, Woolloongabba. We will be cohabiting with our friends Reverse Garbage!

We want to extend our thanks to The Wilderness Society and the Queensland Conservation Council for the use of thier offices in recent months.

Litigants say Xstrata’s mega mine threatens Great Barrier Reef

This week marks the next step in the epic court battle between local environmentalists and multinational coal mining giant Xstrata. Friends of the Earth were presented with 7 pages of questions from Xstrata's lawyers regarding the details of their objection.

A 'price on pollution' is not enough for action on climate change

One of Australia's leading environmental organisations has called for the federal government to go further than arguing merely for a carbon price. Friends of the Earth is calling for a range of measures that would significantly increase the development of renewable energy.
