Friends of the Earth Brisbane welcomes student interns and university industrial placements, both from here and overseas.
Students and interns will work towards the aims and objectives of the organisation through an agreed job description and workplan. Please review the Statement of Shared Responsibilities.

Statement of Shared Responsibility
Internship placement with Friends of the Earth Brisbane's Bio-fuels Campaign
Friends of the Earth Brisbane is primarily a volunteer based organisation, and as such we acknowledge the vital contribution of volunteers to our campaign work and organisational foundations. This statement of shared responsibilities outlines the roles and responsibilities of both volunteers and Friends of the Earth Brisbane upon the appointment of volunteers to positions within the campaign.
As a research intern with Friends of the Earth Brisbane, you will be subject to the guidelines set out in Friends of the Earth's Volunteer Policy. This Volunteer Policy document and the rules of Friends of the Earth Brisbane Co-op Limited will be made available to you upon agreement of your placement, and the key rights and responsibilities are also set out below.
Project requirements
Hours of work will be negotiated according to the needs of research degree and the specific project being undertaken. In accordance with University requirements, you may be required to keep a record of hours worked in a standard time sheet, with this submitted to the campaign coordinator or project officer each month.
Starting and finishing dates are also to be negotiated in accordance with University program and course requirements

Reporting mechanism
It is expected that you will communicate regularly (weekly) with the identified project liaison person within Friends of the Earth to share research findings and ensure the project direction is consistent with the needs of the organisation. Following the completion of the research, it is expected that a report be produced within the agreed timeframe.
Outputs
Research opportunities supplied to students by Friends of the Earth will require students to share their learnings and findings with the organisation on an ongoing basis. Sharing opportunities take place fortnightly via face to face meetings and via online discussion lists and web-based IT infrastructure. Students will also be required to present a final paper and materials to the organisation using the agreed template, referencing and file storage format.
Workplace and Support
Friends of the Earth is flexible in its working arrangements. Researchers located in the Brisbane area are required to work from the office space at the Friends of the Earth Brisbane ofice, West End, however other arrangements may be negotiated. Volunteers working within the Friends of the Earth Brisbane office are expected to contribute to maintaining a clean and safe working environment, as per the Volunteer Policy. Researchers in other geographic locations are required to organise their own workspaces either within their University or elsewhere.
IT support is available, as required by the project, through Friends of the Earth Brisbane's ITC team.
Internship Conditions
Personal Accident insurance cover and Public Liability insurance cover will cover volunteers whilst performing activities on behalf of FoE and/or relevant duties listed in the agreed position job description.
All volunteers must comply with the rules of FoE (Co-op Rules) and relevant
statutory requirements for the workplace such as Anti-Discrimination legislation, Workplace Health and Safety legislation and the Information Privacy Act 2009.
Volunteers, including interns, are entitled to sick leave throughout the year. However, a medical certificate may be required for three or more day's concurrent sick leave when bound under volunteer placement arrangements.
Intellectual Property Rights
The intellectual property rights of any research undertaken with Friends of the Earth through a University Institution, are shared between the research student and Friends of the Earth Brisbane Co-op Ltd according to a negotiated agreement.
The negotiated terms will provide ownership to Friends of the Earth to use the material developed by the student free of charge and ensure the rights of both parties are upheld in a fair manner.
Evaluation and Review
FoE is committed to ensuring all volunteers are involved in work that is enjoyable, satisfying and suited to the individual. Reviews are conducted by the campaign or project coordinator and a range of methods may be used, including: formal and informal feedback, output review, and on the job informal mentoring and training. In the review processes, participants are encouraged to speak their mind about unsatisfactory or unenjoyable position placements. It is the right of every volunteer to freely offer either pro-active or critical information and feedback to FoE, with the aim of pursuing suitable work.
In order to develop the collaborative relationship between the University Institution and Friends of the Earth, it is expected that evaluations will be conducted by both the researcher and Friends of the Earth Brisbane, according to established evaluation guidelines.
