Walking to Canberra from Brisbane was an option I entertained a few months ago when a friend told me she was organising a planet awareness walk. I told her then i was impressed with her spirit and wished her well. After many promptings from various sources I have found myself on the road walking beside my friend June and learning heaps about the world in which we live.
The purpose of the walk is to increase Australian awareness of sustainable lifestyle changes, renewable energies and the impact Nuclear Power plants will have if built in Australia. All sounds full of jargon with little meaning to me but have long been a patriotic Aussie,I believe it is a lucky country and I have an obvious love of the Australian bush. So the purpose of my footprints is to learn how I can support and care for the land where I live.
Our walk started last Saturday on march 13 at the Aboriginal cultural centre in Brisbane where we were given a message stick by the local aboriginal people to take to Kevin Rudd inCanberra. We have a meeting with Kevin on May 25 and between now and then we are walking towards our destination. we speak at public forums, we have met the Mayor of Gold Coast, we are handing pamphlets to many passers by and we are only 6 days into the walk.
Daily life is busy. We are being billeted in peoples homes and a couple of times have slept on hall floors on camp mats. It is so much easier to get out of a bed than up off a floor in the mornings. Total dissarray occured on our first few get away mornings but we are working on becoming a well oiled machine as we pack bags, juggle bathroom time, eat breakfast, get lunch ready, work out what route we are taking for the day, pack the support vehicle, find your water bottle and sunscreen, work out the accommodation stop for the night, join in a circle of thanks and blessing and head off on the next 20km stretch. And all this happens by 7am!!! ( it did not take the group long to realise that I am not a morning person........hmmmmm...... wonder if I will become one!!??!!) Usually by 11am my brain catches up with me and I beging to take in the surroundings in which we are walking. QLD IS SOOOOO GREEN!!! There is beautiful soft green grass to lie down in at rest stops!!
Gotta go - will get back to you with lots more to say
Joy and blessings
