Welcome back to the FoEB update after a couple of months' hiatus.
Things have been very busy since the beginning of the year, so we're excited to take the chance to send an update about what's been going on. Watch out next month for all the upcoming events and resources from FoE :)
FoE Brisbane Campaign Updates
Our new home!
After over a year of renovations and hard slog - we have finally moved into our new office in the Gabba. Thanks for all your support to help us get to this point and to be able to continue our campaigning work. Next time you're around Burke Street, feel free to drop by!
Coal and CSG News
Many of you would have been to one of the coal and gas events last month, from the packed convention centre "Food Security Forum" MC'd by the enigmatic Alan Jones, or to the standing-room only Queensland premiere of Bimblebox.
Celebrations are in order after Campbell Newman re-affirmed his pre-election commitments and canned the mining projects at Acland and Felton. This is a huge win, especially for the local communities in those areas who have fought so tenaciously for so long. Hats off to the Friends of Felton, The Oakey Coal Action Alliance, Glen Beutel and Sid, Merrilyn and Tanya Plant.
The bad news is that on Wednesday, the Wandoan Megamine, the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere, got 'recommended' by the land court, with only minor concessions to the local landholders, and was found to have no responsibility for the greenhouse gas impacts of the mine. So begins the long slog to change this - perhaps starting with an appeal.
See more at www.sixdegrees.org.au.
Walk for a Future!
We also welcomed June Norman and Potts Driscoll back from their epic 500 km "walk for a future". The pair walked from the start of the coal railway and gas pipeline in the Surat Basin all the way to Gladstone harbour to meet the UNESCO delegation.

Climate Frontlines - our plans for 2012
Down to
the small number of 4 local members and one temporarily in WA, the
collective is planning a number of activities to focus on
resettlement issues for Pacific Island communities struggling with
the impacts of climate change. Emma Brindal is in the last stages of
completing a research paper on climate change and Pacific migration,
with particular focus on Australia’s policies. The CFC plans to
print and publicise this paper in May, and to use it as an advocacy
tool.

The collective continues to convene the broader Friends of Tulele Peisa group, supporting the resettlement program of the Carteret Islands people in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. With two recent generous donations, the group has been able to achieve its fundraising target for an outboard motor and navigation equipment, to facilitate links between those who have resettled and their communities in the Carterets.
On 16th March, the CFC convenor, Wendy Flannery, was interviewed by 3CR radio (Melbourne) on recent news reports about the purchase of land in Fiji by the government of Kiribati as part of its response to the challenges of climate change. 3CR is keen to keep in touch with and promote the CFC's activities.
The collective would warmly welcome new members to help plan and implement these exciting initiatives. Contact wendy.flannery@gmail.com
Peace and Nuclear Free News
In PACE news lately, Rosemarie
went to the National Conference and found it very inspiring. The
conference sent a message of support to the people at Fukishima
apologising for Australia’s involvement in the disaster by suppling
the uranium in the Fukishima reactors and raising the awareness that
the Honeymoon uranium mine was half owned by a Japanese company. The
Roxby Downs Indenture Act, one of the worst cases of a
government/ business collusion legislation was also discussed
(particularly
it’s immunity from Freedom from Information legislation) and the
strategy for alerting ethical investors that some of their super
funds are invested in BHP.
We
are also organising our data base and working through design ideas for
the new edition of the Irradiation Free Food Guide. Hopefully we will
have Alex as guest expert in design modalities.
Robin
has written an article on food irradiation for Chain Reaction and a
submission by Robin to Food Standards Australia New Zealand and the
Ministerial Council was a substantive contribution to the Court taken
out against FSANZ for malpractise by the Ethical Food Standards lobby
group.
Thanks for your support
Thanks for your continued support of
grassroots environmental advocacy with FoE, we really couldn't do any
of our work without our members and supporters!
You can either volunteer with a campaign collective and become a
front-line activist, organising protests, actions, blockades and
rallies; or help out behind the scenes, researching and writing reports
and submissions, and helping with the day-to-day running of the
organisation.
Or if you're short on time and still want to support, why not consider
an ongoing donation to
fund our crucial work?
