Climate Change

The science is in: the climate is changing. And Australia's natural environment is already paying a heavy price as drought, flooding, fire and other extreme weather events increase.

With current projections that just two degrees of warming will have disasterous impacts around the world the time for meaningful action is now.

Friends of the Earth Brisbane works with other Friends of the Earth groups throughout the world to help transform the world to more sustainable future.

We believe that climate change impacts upon all aspects of the environment and society and that a grassroots response to this challenge is needed.

Welcome to our last ebulletin of the year, where we've decided to provide some snapshots of the exciting wins the Queensland environmental movement has had in 2011. It's been a cracker of a year world-wide, with Occupy, the Arab spring and anti-corporate protests shaking the world. Let's remember, strategise and imagine... Where will 2012 take us?!

Outlining the reality

With two-thirds of our planet covered by oceans, and living as we do in a land “girt by sea”, Friends of the Earth Australia sees this year’s World Oceans Day (8th June), focusing on the theme of “Oceans and People”, as an opportune moment to highlight the way in which carbon pollution is undermining the life-supporting capacities of our oceans and magnifying their destructive potential.

The irradiation of tomatoes & capsicums (bell peppers) has been approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) today.

In Australia, all irradiation is done with nuclear material.

Now, A1069 (the application for the irradiation of tomatoes and capsicums) only requires rubber-stamping from the Ministerial Council.  Each state has at least one STATE MP on the Council.  Let your local member know that you say NO!!!

Sunday 20 January 2013

The first week of January has seen unprecedented temperatures throughout Australia with many records being broken.  At the end of that week the Climate Commission released a report: "Off The Charts: Extreme Australian summer heat" which clearly links the events of that week with climate change.  Unfortunately it recieved little or no mass media coverage.  Read it here: http://climatecommission.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/CC_Jan_2013_Heatwave4.pdf
